About Ragtag Wine Co 2018 Chardonnay, San Lucas Vyd, Monterey
In 2016, a sister and her younger brother, Sarah & Jeff, committed to creating a winery that represented their absolute best efforts. The goal was not just to create a winery, but to do something meaningful. At Ragtag Winery, the goal is to get as many things right as possible in the vineyard. They strive to do only what is necessary to improve a wine’s quality during winemaking.
They pay attention to the little things and make small batch wines that allows them to take the utmost care while overseeing the development of each grape varietal. Hailing from some of California’s best vineyards from the Edna Valley to Monterey County, Ragtag tries to keep things close to home to maintain their hands-on approach. But they don’t always follow the rules; if they find high-quality grapes, they might reach a little further to get them.
This wine was barrel fermented and with 15 months on lees and has notes of carmel, honey, and butterscotch, coupled with brown butter pears and bananas on the nose. Subtle aromas of pecans, almonds, and amaretto. It is light to medium bodied with a creamy mid-palate weight coats the mouth without being overly viscous, leading to a supple finish.
Wine Enthusiast scored this 90 points saying “Dried peach, apricot and salted-butter aromas are cut by lime skin and lemon juice on the nose of this bottling from the San Lucas region. The palate is a classic expression, offering apple flesh, light butter, ample lemon and a hint of stone.”
