About Renieri 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

The Renieri estate is located in the southern part of Montalcino on high altitude slopes. Owner/Winemaker Marco Bacci puts intense focus on his vineyards to produce the best possible fruit. His 70 acres of vines face southeast to southwest at around 1,200 above sea level. These high-altitude vines are planted in uniquely diverse, iron-rich soil that's rare for this region. High density plantings are utilized to create extremely low yields.

The low-yield fruit is deeply flavored, and in an outstanding vintage like this 2016 brings bold character and intensity to long aged Riserva.

James Suckling scored this 98 points saying "Enticing black truffle aromas with cherry and strawberry. The palate is full and tight with super polished tannins that are layered and refined. Great length. Goes on and on. Try after 2025 but already captivating."

The Wine Advocate scored this 94 points saying "The Renieri 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is balanced and bright, but it also shows the unmistakable power and grit of this classic vintage. Cassis and cherry are framed by fragrant balsam aromas with tarry smoke, cola and licorice. There is a glossy note here as well that recalls natural rubber, followed by pretty mineral tones that add elegance.

Wine Spectator scored this 94 points saying "An intense version, this red delivers a beam of concentrated black cherry, black currant, violet, chocolate and earth flavors. Firms up at the end, where the dense tannins leave a compact feel for now. Shows savory elements that peek through on the finish. Best from 2025 through 2040."

Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 93 points saying "Camphor, new leather, blue flower and dark spice aromas come to the forefront. Full-bodied and elegantly structured, the savory palate delivers ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and tobacco framed in tightly wound, fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. It’s still youthfully austere and needs a few more years to unwind. Drink 2026–2031."
