About Rioja Gran Reserva 2016 Marques de Riscal

Named European Winery of The Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine in 2013, Marques de Riscal is one of Rioja's legendary estates.  In 1858 Herederos de Marqués de Riscal became the first winery in the Rioja to produce wines following the Bordeaux method of slow fermentation and careful blending. Marqués de Riscal Reserva is one of the most famous wines in Spain, due to its long history, consistent high quality and also for the many literary references it has inspired over the years.

Very versatile and a faithful example of a Rioja wine, Marqués de Riscal Reserva has been enjoyed for generations by wine lovers all over the world, and praised by celebrities from the world of the arts and culture such as Ernest Hemingway, Salvador Dalí or Frederick Forsyth.

To make this Gran Reserva wine, Marqués de Riscal uses grapes from old vines over 80 years of age, from their own estate vineyards and from local growers. The wine destined for making the Gran Reserva is set aside after the final coupages and goes into French oak barrels where it spends 28 months, followed by another three years in bottle before its release. 80% Tempranillo and 20% Graciano and Mazuelo.

Wine Enthusiast scored this wine 95 Points and said This deep-ruby-colored wine offers aromas of black plum, dark chocolate and Earl Grey tea. On entry, it is smooth in the mouth, with flavors of mint, clove, cherry, black currant, dark chocolate and orange blossom. Vigorous tannins coat the tongue and gums and diffuse into a lingering finish."
