About Rodney Strong Symmetry Meritage 2017

Always one of the top Meritage wines produced in California and Rodney Strong's flagship, Symmetry is a wine whose name sums up what it's all about. To make Symmetry select areas within each of their many Alexander Valley vineyards where they have grown Bordeaux varietals for over 40 years, are hand harvested, fermented separately and aged in the finest French oak barrels. After about six months, each lot is tasted and graded; only the highest graded wines are considered for Symmetry. The blend is then assembled, and the wine is returned to barrels to facilitate flavor integration. The wine is aged an additional 10 to 18 months, before bottling. Consulting Enologist David Ramey oversee the entire process.

The 2017 vintage will not be soon forgotten. The all-time precipitation record was set by mid-April as rain swept like waves over the North Coast, filling all the lakes, ponds and reservoirs. As the rain clouds subsided and the sun appeared, the vineyards in Sonoma County endured six different heat waves at or above 100F including a memorable 110F on Labor Day. They harvested the fruit from September 16th - October 13th to make this beautiful red wine.

This stellar blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 12% Malbec, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc has been aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, 75% new oak.

Jeb Dunnuck 91 Points
Based on 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec, 12% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Symmetry has a darker fruited, pepper, herbal style offering nicely integrated oak and cedar notes, medium-bodied richness, some firmer tannins, and rock-solid overall balance. It shows lots of classic Sonoma Cabernet character and has loads to love. It too should keep for over a decade and will probably benefit from short-term cellaring.
