The 2012 Rosso di Montalcino was the first one ever produced at Antinori's Pian
Delle Vigne Estate. It was created through years of experimentation
with the vines to achieve a wine that is both high quality but with
youthful approach ability and charm. This wine from the superb 2015 vintage continues the tradition. The Pian delle Vigne
estate takes its name from a 19th century railroad station located
within the confines of the property. Located to the north of the Orcia
river valley and and just south of the town of Montalcino the estate has
just over 150 acres of vines. The southeastly exposure and the high
altitude between 400 and 650 feet above sea level allow the grapes to
ripen fully but mature slowly and evenly. This ripe red, 100% Sangiovese, was aged 12
months in large oak casks before bottling.
The Wine Spectator scored this 91 points saying "This is smooth and bright, with cherry, strawberry, earth and mineral flavors. Remains fresh on the finish, with a long, licorice-tinged finish. Drink now through 2023."
And James Suckling scored it 92 saying "A linear and fine red with plum and berry character. Medium body and a tangy finish. Plenty of dried orange peel and intense fruit. Just the right amount of cedar and sandalwood."
