Samuel Louis Smith is what you would call a micro-négociant. He studied at UC Davis and made wine in the Northern Rhone, Bordeaux and the Willamette Valley before returning to California where he became winemaker at Morgan Vineyards for several years before staring his own brand. Organic viticulture, mountainous sites, and minimal intervention in the cellar are tenets of the brand.
Spear is a young, yet very exciting site in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills. Planted in 2014 and farmed organically, its varied elevation reaches 900 feet and soils are comprised of marine sedimentary clay and sand. Our chard block is primarily sedimentary clay. This wine sees 40% malolactic fermentation with native alcoholic and malolactic fermentations occurred in barrel. It goes through 9 months élévage in 20% new, 20% second-fill, and 60% neutral French oak barrels with only 10 barrels produced!
Wine Enthusiast rated this 96 Points and enthusiastically boasted 'Everyone needs to get fired up by brisk, racy and mineral-driven Chardonnays like these—they're the future. Aromas of just-ripe apple, Meyer lemon zest, white flower and stone drop into a palate of wet concrete, tight pear and delicate honeydew.'
And their Pelio Vineyard Pinot Noir from the same vintage was a Top 10 Wine of California from Wine Enthusiast as well!
