Fine Brunello from the southern slopes of the Sant' Antimo Valley
  • 95 Points
  • Estate vineyards at 1500 feet
  • Fruit selected grape by grape at winery
  • "shows proverbial meat on its bones"
San Polo is situated in Podernovi, on the southern slope of Montalcino. The valley is called Sant’ Antimo very close to Mount Amiata. San Polo’s modern and innovative winemaking is cutting-edge technology and the year 2007 marked the beginning of a new era for San Polo. An eco-friendly approach was developed, leading to a steadfast commitment to sustainability, which is now the hallmark of the Estate.

This 2015 Brunello is 100% Sangiovese from the San Polo and Montluc estate vineyards, at 1,500 feet above sea level with desirable Southeast-South-Southwest exposure. Grapes are hand harvested and selected again in the winery grape-by-grape. Fermentation lasts 22 days and the wine aged in oak casks for 30 months.

James Suckling scored this 95 points saying "The ripe red fruit here is so expressive and floral, featuring dried rose petals, hibiscus, poppies, dried strawberries and raspberries. It falls inwards on the palate, compressed and captivating, gathering rough-edged strands of tannins as it goes, threading them through an iron-fisted, central core of flavor and texture. Drink from 2025."

The Wine Advocate scored this 93 points saying "Recognized by its red shield-shaped label, the Poggio San Polo 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is a dark and nicely concentrated expression of Sangiovese. This wine shows proverbial meat on its bones with rich cherry and cassis, backed by cola, potting soil and balsam wood. The bouquet grows in intensity as the wine warms in the glass. The tannins are well integrated within the depth and length of the mouthfeel. Give this Brunello a few more years to flesh out and soften."

Wine Spectator scored this 92 points saying "A more delicate style than many 2015s, this displays cherry, strawberry, mineral and tobacco flavors. Builds in weight as the solid matrix of tannins asserts itself on the lively finish. Best from 2022 through 2038."
