About Santa Rita 2020 Pewen Carmenere, Apalta

Viña Santa Rita was founded in 1880 by Don Domingo Fernández Concha, a leading businessman and public figure of the time. Don Domingo brought the finest French grape varieties to the rich soils of the Maipo Valley, together with specialized equipment and a team of top winemakers from France. This brought techniques that were hitherto unknown in Chile, changing the way in which wines were made in the country and bringing spectacular results.

Pewën is their icon Carménère and is, without a doubt, a leader of its kind in Chile. Hailing from the small terroir of Apalta, birthplace to some of the country’s best Carménère wines, and a small plot of grapevines dating back to 1938, this wine is the reflection of the grape’s potential; a mature and elegant wine that helps position Carménère among the top varietals in the world.

The grapes were manually harvested in late March, destemmed, and partially crushed for a five-day pre-fermentation maceration with 3% whole berries at the bottom of the tank. The spontaneous fermentation took place in concrete and stainless steel tanks at 75ºF. Extraction was significant early in the fermentation with daily pumpovers and délestages (rack & return) procedures. The intensity was decreased toward the end, which resulted in achieving softer, more elegant tannins. A six-day post-fermentation maceration resulted in the rounded character this wine is known for. The skins were pressed using a vertical press, and the press wine was aged in barrels before becoming an important component in the final blend. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (40% new, 60% second use) and was bottled unfiltered.

The 2020 Carmenere Pewen from Apalta was aged for 14 months in 40% new oak. Purple in colorthe nose offers notes of fresh blackberries and jam, gentle jalapeno aromas, and complex hints from the ripe fruit and cear from the aging process. Terse in the mouth with a broad, muscular flow and polished tannins; the freshness enhances the long, fruity finish.

This gorgeous red is rich and concentrated yet also quite elegant, showing guava paste notes amid blackberry and black currant flavors that fan out midpalate, thanks to a lift of fresh acidity. Picks up hints of marinated Nyon olive and chrysanthemum, ending with tremendous length and a note of chocolate cordial. Drink now through 2028. 550 cases made, 15 cases imported.

92 Points Wine Enthusiast
Fruit-forward, this wine shows ripe cherry and cranberry aromas. Vibrant acidity and juicy fruit flavors make a delicious fresh palate. It has gripping tannins supporting cherry and herbaceous notes. A light note of smoke adds depth.
