When a passion project Napa Cab is produced by one of the most iconic winemakers in all of Napa, you know it is going to be fantastic! This Single Vineyard 100% Cabernet produced by Robert Foley is really a tremendous effort on every level. Shelter is where Bob finds small plots of great fruit that would otherwise be sold to the usual suspects around Napa (who shall remain nameless). He makes small productions of these wines to showcase the exquisite fruit which displays the intricacies of the region. The name "The Butcher" comes from a good friend of Bob's who is hands down the best butcher (and perhaps the most notorious) in Brooklyn.
For those not familiar with Mr. Foley, he began his wine making career in the Napa Valley in 1977, having just graduated from UC Davis with degrees in both Viticulture and Enology. He spent his first year working for Heitz Cellars, followed by 15 years as the founding winemaker for Markham Vineyards. In 1992, Bob began another 15 years as the founding winemaker for Pride Mountain Vineyards. He now focuses mostly on Robert Foley Vineyards wines, but also creates the offerings of Shelter Wines... and we are fortunate to have found this hidden gem from him!
All of the fruit for this 100% Clone 337 Cabernet is sourced from the Solari Vineyard at the Northern Apex of Napa Valley, 3 miles North of Calistoga. Less than 40 Barrels are produced of this wine which sees 18 months in Oak (30% New French Oak), and all of the wine making takes place at Robert Foley Vineyards in Howell Mountain.
This wine is loaded with dark, rich black and blue fruit with toasty notes of oak, a bold blanket of ripe tannins and a long silky finish. It has the perfect amount of bottle age and I promise you drinks like a wine twice its price.
