About Smith & Hook 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Central Coast
Smith & Hook is a very unique winery that dates back to the early 1980's. Now one of the Hahn Family wineries, they're unique in that although located in the Central Coast where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the dominant varietals, they built their reputation producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon that they still maintain today. Sourcing from select, warmer micro-climates, they've been able to produce Cab that rivals much of their North Coast competition. This wine for example, from the outstanding 2015 vintage uses grapes from the San Antonio Valley at the Southern end of the Santa Lucia Mountains, as well as from Arroyo Seco and Paso Robles. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine was aged in 40% new French oak barrels. Wine Enthusiast Magazine designated this and Editors' Choice and scored it 93 points saying "This is a big but balanced expression of Cabernet that is ready to drink now. Layers of black cherry, caramel, vanilla, smoke and crushed black rocks show on the lavish nose. The palate's chalky texture is immediately apparent, with vibrant acidity that carries forth a rich crème de cassis flavor and finishes on roasted coffee and milk chocolate."
