About Tardieu-Laurent 2018 Crozes Hermitage, Vieilles Vignes

Producing Rhone Valley wines of world acclaim, Tardieu-Laurent is a very unique negociant. Finding small lots of wine from growers with old vines and raising the wines in small oak casks, often 100% new, blending and bottling.  They work with organic and biodynamic farmers. They should be regarded as artisan producers, making only a very few barrels of any single wine, allowing for each wine to be raised with the utmost care and attention. None of the wines are fined and only a few have a very light filtration.

This wine is 100% Syrah, from 60-year-old vines from four different sites. The wine aged12 months in Allier and Tronçais oak barrels, then 6 months in foudres.

Wine Spectator scored this 94 points saying “Lots here. This red is nicely packed, with plenty of black cherry, blackberry and black currant fruit steeped with anise and sweet tobacco, carried by bramble and sweet bay leaf accents through the finish. Shows late flashes of white pepper and iron.”

Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded this an Editors' Choice and scored it 92 points saying "Rose petals, tar and deep, black cassis abound in this concentrated but breathlessly fresh Syrah. Rich in black fruit and elegantly perfumed, it’s an elevated Crozes-Hermitage structured by crisp acidity and a spine of fine, taut tannins. Best now–2028."

The Wine Advocate scored this 92 points saying “Always one of the top value offerings here, the 2018 Crozes Hermitage Vieilles Vignes—sourced from the communes of Gervans and Larnage—features soaring, exotic perfumes of stone fruit, violets, star anise and fresh herbs. In the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied, with a fresh, silky feel and a sexy juxtaposition of power and restraint that brought me back for second and third tastes. A lengthy finish reprises the floral aspects of the nose, while adding deeper notes of black olive and licorice.”

Jeb Dunnuck scored this barrel sample 90-92 points saying “Moving to the Northern Rhône releases from this terrific estate, the 2018 Crozes-Hermitage Vieilles Vignes offers a terrific sense of purity and elegant as well as medium to full body, polished tannins, and classic gamy, pepper, dark-fruited aromas and flavors. It’s well worth seeking out.”
