About Tarrawatta 2018 Ambervale Shiraz, Eden Valley, Australia

Tarrawatta has strong links to the first European settlement of South Australia and was originally part of a prized country estate that included Collingrove and Lindsay Park. The original estate was surrounded by endless park like grazing country and included extensive, grand English style gardens. Along with the gardens and orchards came some of the first grape vine cuttings in the region, planted at Old Tarrawatta in the 1840s. Cuttings from the vines originally planted at Old Tarrawatta are likely to have parented many of the revered old vineyards throughout the Barossa Ranges.

Shiraz is the undisputed king of the Barossa. It was among the first varieties planted here in the early 1840s and has outshone the hundreds of varieties that have been trialled since. The soils and typography of the Barossa are incredibly diverse. The red rocky soils of the Ambervale vineyard in the northern Eden Valley produce some of the Barossa's most powerful, structured and fragrant Shiraz. This wine is a blend of their best-performing Shiraz block from the exceptional 2018 vintage.

Jeb Dunnuck scored this 95 points saying "I loved the 2018 Shiraz Ambervale. This is classic Shiraz done with elegance and purity as well as richness. Lots of ripe black berry fruits, chocolate, mint, damp earth, and violet notes define the bouquet, and it's full-bodied and brilliantly balanced, with ripe tannins and notable freshness. It's a gem of a wine to enjoy over the coming 7-8 years. Drink: 2021-2029."

Vinous scored this 93 points saying "[$40 list] Inky violet color. Powerful aromas of blackberry, cherry-cola, violet and woodsmoke are complemented by a hint of vanilla that builds with air. Sweet, seamless and expansive on the palate, offering sappy cassis, blackberry, cherry preserve and licorice flavors that are supported by a core juicy acidity. Deepens and becomes spicier on the clinging finish, which features well-knit tannins and repeating florality. Drink: 2023-2033."

James Suckling scored this 93 points saying"Very attractive aromas of spice, bark, and black truffle to the ripe blue fruit. Full-bodied, layered and rich with lovely density and richness. Firm yet layered tannins. I like the opulence with firmness. Drinkable now, but better in a few years. Try after 2022."
