About Tenute Capaldo 2017 Goleto Greco di Tufo

Tenute Capaldo is a passion project of Antonio Capaldo, the owner of Feudi di San Gregorio, one of the largest and most respected wineries in Southern Italy. Tenute Capaldo is separate from Feudi, and designed to show off the unique, diverse terroir of the Irpinia region in the central part of Campania. These are very small production wines that showcase the beauty and potential of Southern Italy.

The Greco grapes for Goleto originate from selected vines within a 6 acre parcel in the San Paolo area within the town of Tufo. Here the vineyards are over 30 years old and grow near sulphureous mines. They are cultivated following different historic methods of the region. Harvest is done by hand and generally happens between the first and the second week of October, depending on the vintage characteristics. Fermentation happens in stainless steel tanks; then the following year 80% of the cuvee is aged in gently toasted large tonneaux oak barrels and the remaining 20% in amphora. Afterwards the finished wine is aged in bottle for an additional year before release.

This is a new project from Feudi di San Gregorio CEO Antonio Capaldo. The Tenute Capaldo 2017 Greco di Tufo Goleto is named after a white stone monastery that frames the background of this vineyard site. Following years of intense experimentation at the Feudi winery, with a dozen or so commercial bottlings of single-vineyard expressions of both the Greco and the Fiano grapes from various pinpoint geological sites spread across Irpinia, Antonio and his team are ready to unveil their best performing wines. It should not go unnoticed that this wine is a Greco. In the ongoing battle of supremacy between Campania's two leading white grapes, it seems that Tenute Capaldo has put its bets on Greco, known for its immediate freshness and encouraging aging record. Will Greco become one of the Noble Whites of Southern Italy? The answer here seems to be yes. Antonio affirms: "Greco is the most important variety we have here in Irpina." Starting with the 2019 vintage, this wine will be bumped up to Riserva status (the vines are 70 years old and planted in calcareous and sulfur-rich soils). Both the 2017 and 2018 vintages are characterized by hot spells during the summer months. With only 5,000 bottles made during this first release from 2017, the wine shines with beautiful luminosity from the inside out. The bouquet is extremely chiseled and fine at this young stage, boasting etched sea breeze and mineral notes that define what we love most about Campania wines. Those aromas are tightly bound and nervous now, and this bodes well for the future evolution of the wine. In my experience, a great Greco (take the Pietracupa 2010 Greco di Tufo as an example) can hold strong for as much as 20 years. For this reason, I feel confident in recommending a long drinking window.

This is so chalky and dusty on the nose with dried lemons and white peaches. Honeysuckle as well. Full- to medium-bodied, with light green apples, flowers and light honey. Yet so mineral and layered. Cashmere texture. Impressive single vineyard Greco. Aging beautifully. Drink now.

Pale golden-tinged yellow. Very gently oaked aromas and flavors of vanilla and nutmeg complement pomaceous orchard fruit and botanical herbs. Closes long and lemony. Made from 60- to 70-year-old 100% Greco vines grown in the commune of Tufo, this is the first vintage of this wine, made by the owner of Feudi di San Gregorio but under a different name. Aged 80% in oak and 20% in amphora. Ought to age fairly well.
