Terre Rouge and Easton Wines was founded in the late 80s by husband and wife team Bill Easton and Jane O’Riordan. Winemaker Bill Easton began his career in the wine business working for small California wineries. In the late 70's he founded Solano Cellars, a wine shop in Berkeley, California, specializing in small artisan producers from around the world.
TERRE ROUGE means "Red Earth". This vermillion-colored soil is one of the hallmarks of our region. Our vineyards are in soils that are largely granite and volcanic-based. The TERRE ROUGE portfolio is composed of wines made from Rhône varietals grown in the rugged and varying terroirs of this region: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne. High elevation sites up to 3200’ contribute to the complexity of our wines.
All of the grapes are grown in selected Syrah sites scattered throughout the Sierra Nevada in granite and volcanic-based soils. This is a deeply concentrated wine with dense layers of aromatic complexity. Loads of deeply concentrated and incredibly spicy fruit aromas fill your glass. In the mouth you’ll find thick concentrated and riotous meaty Syrah flavors, smoky wood tones, exotic spices, mineral tones, and fine tannins. Great structure and aging potential. The grapes macerated for two weeks in an open-top fermenter with punchdowns two to three times a day. The wine was aged for 23 months in French oak barrels (François Frères, Ermitage, and other cooperages - from four different forests) and lightly egg-white fined prior to being bottled unfiltered.
Wine Enthusiast scored this 96 points and awarded it a Cellar Selection saying, "Smoky, earthy, anise and dark-chocolate aromas give way to concentrated, layered black-plum, clove and blackberry flavors as this full-bodied wine seems to expand on the palate. Its texture is richly tannic and the mouthfeel is generous, prolonging the lush flavors on the finish. A perennial standout, this wine has proven it can age well. Best after 2025."
