Trefethen Estate winery is one of the few in Napa Valley that's never bought any grapes. All of their wines are produced with grapes sourced from their estate vineyards, mostly the 61 vineyard blocks that make up their Main Ranch. The establishment of the Oak Knoll District AVA in 2004 is in large part due to Trefethen's presence there. Just south of Yountville and Stag's Leap, Oak Knoll is one of the coolest regions in the Valley. That makes it ideal for growing Chardonnay with beautiful complexity and bright acidity.
This 2017, sourced entire from the Main Ranch is 61% barrel fermented. It spent 9 months in 13% new oak, but only 4% undergoes malolactic fermentation. The lively acidity brings makes a perfect match for food and even for cellaring. Trefethen Chards are famous for aging beautifully over many years.
Decanter Magazine scored this 90 points saying "A fine Chardonnay with great concentration of fine green apple, tropical fruit and stone fruit with a hint of nuttiness and a lovely oak smokiness."
James Suckling scored this 90 points saying "Pear drops, cooked apples and cantaloupe melon. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity and a fruity finish."
