About Varozza 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, St. Helena, Napa Valley

Varozza is a family owned estate in the heart of Napa Valley. With 38 acres of vineyards right in St. Helena they've made a successful career of supplying first class wine grapes to countless producers over many years, including through prohibition selling grapes and making sacramental wine for the church...and likely for some neighbors. Of course they would also peel off a few bushels to produce some of their own wine, getting pretty serious in the 2000's working with winemaker Bill Balentine from St. Clement and now with rising star Kristy Melton. Production of their Estate Cab has always been small but luckily for us there was some of this delectable 2009 was still aging in their cellar when we came calling. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from their vineyard, only 550 cases were produced (actually a large amount for them). The wine was aged for 26 months in 35% new French oak barrels. Here's an ideal opportunity to enjoy a prime Napa Cab that's shed all of its youthful tannins and taken on the robe of maturity with all of the deep layers of flavor and nuance that that brings. The wine is deep purple in color, and aromas of dark chocolate, blackberry and espresso waft out of the glass. The palate is met with generous flavors of berry compote and mocha that integrate with beautiful spice elements. The texture has evolved into a full and rich silkiness with supple tannins that provide structure and length. A rare treat but it's limited so don't miss it!
