Dana Estates is the third winery to occupy this piece of vineyard land in the heart of the famed Rutherford Bench. First farmed and developed by German viticulturalist H. W. Helms in 1883. Proprietor Hi Sang Lee bought the property in 2005. The winery was re-designed by renowned architect Howard Backen, keeping the original stone walls as its centerpiece. Hi Sang and Howard worked carefully with winemakers Philippe Melka and Cameron Vawter to ensure that the space and facilities would enable the production of consistently world-class wines.
Dana Estate wines have become rare cult favorites. VASO is their wine sourced from four vineyards, Hershey, on Howell Mountain, Helms on the Rutherford Bench, Crystal Springs on the slopes of Howell Mountain and Lotus, just above Crystal Springs. The core of this 2018 VASO blend comes from the highest and coolest vineyard, Hershey Vineyard sitting atop Howell Mountain. Harvest of Malbec and Merlot started at Hershey on October 4th, and the remainder of the Cabernet was picked mid to late October. Valley floor fruit, including fruit from the Rutherford Helms Vineyard, had the most diverse ripening. The final blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot.
James Suckling scored this 95 points saying "Gorgeous aromas of blackberries, currants and plums with some spices. Walnuts and chocolate, too. Full-to medium-bodied with very fine tannins and delicious, succulent fruit, as well as hints of herbs. Some stemmy character. So balanced and delicious. 90% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot, 4% malbec and 1% petite verdot. Drink or hold."
Jeb Dunnuck scored this 94 points saying "The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Vaso is cut from the same cloth, offering beautiful purity and richness. It’s slightly more pure and darker than the spicier 2017 and has notes of cassis, redcurrants, dark chocolate, tobacco, and violets. Full-bodied on the palate, it has silky tannins, terrific overall balance, and just loads of character and charm. It’s in the running for the greatest Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon under $100. Best after 2022."
