About Viña San Pedro 2012 Syrah 1865 Limited Edition, Elqui Valle
Only produced in the best vintages, this Limited Production Syrah comes from Viña San Pedro's vineyards located in Chile's Elqui Valley. The soils are composed of gravel deposits from the Elqui River. Mineral rich, they have a silty clay texture. The location, approximately 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean offers marine influence. A sea fog passes through the Elqui River basin every morning, depositing moisture on the vineyards until around midday. This ensures a cool climate, in conjunction with generally good air circulation stemming from windy local conditions, helping to produce distinctive, well balanced grapes.
Grapes were harvested by hand from two unique parcels and underwent fermentation in wooden tanks (old French oak). Pre-fermentation cold maceration lasted for five days, prior to fermentation of between 10 and 12 days, with native yeasts. Aging was then for 12 months in French oak barrels, 7% new oak.
James Suckling scored this 95 points saying "This is real syrah with so much earth, spice, nut and black pepper aromas. So smoky. Full body, soft and silky tannins and a beautiful finish. Fantastic length and intensity. Decadent. Believe that price. Drink now."
