About Vincent Girardin 2016 Corton Perrieres, Grand Cru

The history of Maison Vincent Girardin is relatively recent. In 1980, at the age of 19, Vincent Girardin, the son of a family of winegrowers based in Santenay since the 17th century, decided to strike out on his own and began producing wine from five acres of vines that he had inherited from his parents. Today, the owners continue to uphold the quality and style of the wines with unique offerings.

The grapes come from 45 year old vines in the "Les Perrières” Grand Cru vineyard located in the center of Aloxe-Corton, in the north of the Côte de Beaune with clay and limestone soils. A steep slope with eastern exposure. Manual harvest with sorting on vine is followed by triage on a sorting table at the winery. The grapes after a light crushing and destemming are put whole in stainless steel tanks. After a cold maceration of a few days, the active phase of fermentation takes place with temperature control. During this period, the wine is pumped over and/or punched down. After fermentation the wine goes into barrels (about 30% new wood) where it ages for 15 months for this wine, during which time the malolactic fermentation took place. One month before bottling, the wine from the different barrels is assembled in vats. The wine is bottled unfined according to the lunar calendar.

Vinous scored barrel sample this 91-94 points saying "(from soil rich in chalk and silex ): Bright ruby-red. Deep aromas of spices, flint minerality and superripe fruit, leavened by a floral quality. Bigger and richer than the Pommards Grands Epenots, showing more smoky minerality but less easy sweetness today. A more complex, refined wine in a saline, very savory style, and long on the aftertaste."

Burghound.com scored a barrel sample 90-93 saying "A very pungent nose combines notes of reduction, wood and menthol. There is excellent complexity to the rich, round and relatively refined medium weight plus flavors due in part to the fine grain of the supporting tannins and balanced finish that demonstrates outstanding persistence. The mouth feel is notably finer than that of the straight Corton though there is slightly less overall depth, at least today - this of course may change as the wine ages." Limited!
