About Zenato 2016 Amarone Classico Riserva, Sergio Zenato
Amarone Riserva “Sergio Zenato” is produced only in excellent vintages and is a standard-bearer for Amarone. Produced from a selection of grapes, 80% Corvina, 10% Rondinella and 10% Oseleta coming from the oldest vineyards in Costalunga estate in Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella. The particularly low yields have led to a wine of great concentration.
The grapes are left to raisin dry for 3-4 months in small trays (only one layer), well-spaced out to allow good air circulation. The wine pressing takes place in January through de-stemmer and pre-maceration of the skins on the must. Skin contact fermentation lasted 15-20 days, then the wine has been aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for 48 months.
James Suckling scored this 98 points saying "Unfathomable depth and complexity here, with roasted dark licorice, blackberries, tar, porcini, mussels and black chocolate. A light hint of balsamic adds a savory edge, too. The seamless tannins build up gradually on the full-bodied palate. Great balance of ripeness, concentration and freshness, with a lasting finish. Drinkable now, but much better after 2025."
Wine Spectator scored this 94 points saying "This graceful, medium- to full-bodied red is finely knit and harmonious, with a pleasing juiciness to the flavors of black cherry and black plum reduction, sandalwood, citrus and brambly herbs. Shows supple, well-meshed tannins, which emerge on the lingering, spiced finish. Corvina, Rondinella, Oseleta and Croatina."
